Lidded Jar with Buddha Niches in Green Aventurine

A 6-inch lidded jar hand-carved from green aventurine, with a seated Buddha carved into an arched niche on each of its four sides and a removable crown-form lid rising to a finial.

The body is banded top and bottom with lotus-petal and scroll registers, and each Buddha sits within its own pillared alcove, cut deep enough that the figures fall into shadow the way they would in a temple recess. The lid is carved as an open crown of petals: a separate piece of work in its own right, shown alongside the jar in the catalog photography. The aventurine here carries unusual gray-green and rose mineral drift through the stone.

A keepsake or ash jar, an altar vessel for offerings, a jewelry box for a dressing table, or simply a collected object for a display cabinet. One of the finest examples of relief work in the collection.
