Why No Two Stones Are Alike

Why No Two Stones Are Alike

When you buy a hand carved gemstone sculpture, you are buying a piece of the earth that took millions of years to form. That history shows up in the stone, and it is exactly why your piece will never be repeated.

What you might notice

  • Color shifts. A single block of rose quartz can move from pale blush to deeper pink. Lapis lazuli carries flecks of gold colored pyrite and white calcite.
  • Veining and banding. Aragonite and calcite often show soft bands where the crystal grew in layers.
  • Inclusions. Tiny mineral traces, the same ones that give aventurine its sparkle, are part of the stone’s structure.
  • Chatoyancy. Tiger’s eye has a silky band of light that moves as you walk past it.

How carvers work with it

A skilled carver reads the block before cutting. Bands can be placed to follow the flow of a robe, a deeper color can become a horse’s mane, and a clear area can be saved for a face. The stone guides the design as much as the design guides the stone.
