How to Care for Your Gemstone Sculpture
Gemstone carvings are built to last generations. A little care keeps them looking their best. Here is everything you need to know.
Dusting
Use a soft, dry brush (a clean makeup brush works perfectly) to lift dust from carved details. Follow with a microfiber cloth on smooth surfaces. Do this every week or two in open rooms.
Deeper cleaning
- Wipe with a cloth dampened in lukewarm water and a drop of mild, pH neutral soap.
- Rinse the cloth and wipe again with plain water.
- Dry immediately with a soft towel so no water sits in the recesses.
Avoid soaking, ultrasonic cleaners, steam, bleach, vinegar and ammonia based sprays. Softer stones such as calcite, aragonite and sodalite are especially sensitive to acids.
Placement
- Stable surfaces. Place heavier pieces on a level shelf or plinth, away from edges and high traffic areas.
- Gentle light. Some stones, including rose quartz, can fade over years of strong direct sunlight. Bright indirect light shows them beautifully without the risk.
- Felt pads. A few small felt pads under the base protect both the sculpture and your furniture.
Handling and moving
Always lift a carving from its base with two hands, never by a raised arm, ear or trunk. When moving house, wrap each piece in a soft cloth, then bubble wrap, and pack it upright with padding on every side.
